Mathematicians love numbers. And I mean 'love', not 'like'. Their enthusiastic passion for all those symbols, squiggles and brain-boggling equations, borders on the intensely emotionally affectionate. Numbers aren't like people. They aren't quixotic and moody. They keep their promises. Their meaning is ever true and consistent. But when taking a view of a sensitive situation you might be unwise to go by the numbers alone.
