There are times when we all have to roll up our sleeves, put our noses to the grindstone and sacrifice short-term satisfaction for long-term gain. Those are the times when we must force ourselves to be pragmatic and honour our responsibilities. But such times really don't have to be uncomfortable or unhappy. There is now a way to enjoy a situation that might superficially seem to be without any potential for gratification. All you have to do in order to find this is be willing to look for it with an open mind.
We spend our lives avoiding some situations and inviting others. That's if we're lucky. Some of us manage to invite the very situations we are trying to avoid. Others get it the other way round, which is potentially worse. Usually, this happens when we think we know what we are doing. Doubts and misgivings are useful if we have a tendency to be over-confident about matters we don't fully understand. Remember this- today's reason to be doubtful is tomorrow's reason to be glad you thought twice.
If you haven't got time to do all that needs to be done, maybe you should spend a little more time doing what doesn't need to be done! When we feel tense or under pressure, we prioritise our activities. We push potentially pleasurable and relaxing experiences to the bottom of the agenda. We feel that it would be far too self-indulgent to give these time and energy. But then, because we have grown so tight and edgy, we start making poor decisions without even realising that this is what we are doing. Take it easier.
Are you tired of trying too hard? Is your life beginning to seem like one long round of tasks to accomplish and problems to solve? What would happen if you were to stop pushing yourself quite so much? Might the world fall apart? Might disaster ensue? Or might you simply find that you are safe to breathe out and let go for a while? Your shoulders are getting tense from all the weight that you have placed upon them. You may yet find that you become far more efficient if you worry a little less and relax a little more.
If you want to make wise decisions, be aware that minds and hearts have different agendas. Rarely, if ever, do the two coincide. Our heads, though, have a nasty habit of speaking on our heart's behalf. They get away with this subterfuge because their voices are so 'reasonable' sounding. Hearts don't shout, they whisper, at least most of the time. And when they do speak up, they make statements that pay no regard to the restrictions of reality. Heads fight battles, hearts seek peace. And peace is what you need (and deserve) now.
