Once, before the world became ethically aware, donkeys were often depicted by cartoonists as following a carrot that was dangling ahead, just out of reach, whilst being beaten on from behind by a stick. These days, we cannot even think of doing such a thing to a poor creature like that. Yet we can identify, all too strongly, with the idea that we are like donkeys in that our hopes are carrots and our fears are the sticks. We all like to do the things we know how to do. They give us a sense of comfort and reassurance. We think, 'I know where I am with this. I know what I am doing. I am on my home turf and I can soon rise to any challenge that this situation poses me.' Is it any wonder then that given a choice between the unknown and the exceedingly obvious and predictable, most of us rapidly gravitate towards the nearest source of safety? But what if we do this at the expense of adventure and opportunity? Be brave enough to experiment.
