We would all enjoy taking a gentle, healthy stroll along a beautiful avenue in perfect weather, wouldn't we? Well, perhaps not if we had a thorn in our foot or a stone in our shoe. That might be more than enough to render the whole proposition too painful. All we would want under such circumstances, would be immediate relief from the cause of discomfort. One difficult factor is now eating up so much of your concentration that you can hardly stop to think about anything else. But don't worry. You can deal with it.
How hard do you have to try - How great is your challenge, how daunting are your circumstances? Don't work on the assumption that things are definitely due to be difficult. Allow, in your calculations, for the possibility of an easy ride or a lucky break. We can't rely on such things, of course. We must be responsible and steel ourselves for hard work and discipline where it may be required. But it is somewhat irresponsible to assume that everything is always going to call for sweat and struggle.
Have you ever watched the sea roll in and out along a stretch of beach? It takes a while before you can tell whether the tide is encroaching or receding. If you just watch one or two rolls of foam, you may get a deceptive impression. Where, in your life now, is the tide of fortune heading? Are you beginning to suspect that where things are good they might not remain good? Do you fear that where they seem bad already, they will only get worse? What's coming towards you now, is something you will welcome.
Why is someone being so unreasonable? Why won't they see sense, play fair, give a little ground? If you were them, you would be willing to compromise, wouldn't you? Or perhaps you wouldn't. Not, at least, if you bore a grudge or resented another person's attitude - or if you felt that a situation was fundamentally unfair. Think of the various reasons why, in the past, you have felt inclined to be difficult. The more effort you make to understand another person's point of view, the more likely you are to help them change it
