'I am a rock, I am an island.' So goes the old Simon and Garfunkel song. But it is a false boast; a claim being made by a person who feels so upset or betrayed that they wish to convince themselves that they live in a state of emotional isolation. But you are not a rock and you are not an island. Nor, perhaps more pointedly, is another sensitive soul in your world who currently might as well be singing that song given the signals they seem to be sending out. Your job is not to take offence but to offer what support you can.Pride is a funny thing. Often, it stands between us and the thing we want most in the world. It fools us. It persuades us that what we want, even more than our heart's desire, is our dignity! Oh yes, dignity. What a terribly important thing that is. Without it, we cannot eat or love or be creative - or be successful or can we? Dignity has no such value. It affords no rewards. Still, though, we let it colour our judgement. Might there be somewhere in your world now, where false pride prevents you from reaching true happiness?
