We are all, to some extent, creatures of habit. Not only do we like to do what we have always done but, if we have not already set a precedent of our own, we like to emulate the choices that those around us have made. We copy our companions. We figure, 'Oh, that's what they do in this situation. If I ever find myself in similar circumstances, I shall do the same'. What's wrong with that?
