A gesture of courage and honesty must now be made if you are hoping to establish meaningful communication with someone who still hurts from an old wound. We may act like we care, but we grow ever more cautious about to whom we will show our true emotions.  When horrid things happen, heads turn and hearts harden. Once the barriers have been put in place, they may never come down again. The world is full of people who communicate with each other from behind a high wall of psychological sandbags!
