How hard it is for us to admit ignorance. How much we like to feel as if we are fully in control, when there is much to do.Often, successful people become like kids trying to construct a tower out of playing cards. They know that the higher they build the more inevitable it is that there will come a moment of collapse. Each carefully, daringly placed piece on the pile adds to the mood of nervousness. For those with a faint heart or a weak disposition it is almost easier not to try.We never run out of ladders. Nor are we short of snakes. In the classic old board game, one lucky player eventually gets to the very last square and earns the right to stay there. But in the real world, we all just keep on going. We roll the dice, we take the requisite number of steps and we find ourselves almost entirely the helpless victims to whatever we discover when our counter lands on the space. You can't turn a snake into a ladder, but when you do arrive at a ladder, you can at least allow yourself to enjoy the ascent.
