There are the things we think - and then there are the things we do. There are also the things that we think we are doing - and how these differ from the things that other people seem to think we are doing. But then 'what are they doing thinking things like that?' And what are we doing thinking about what they are thinking? Shouldn't we be thinking instead about whether our own thoughts fairly reflect our most secret inner needs and feelings? Be honest with yourself, and others will be honest with you.
You cannot turn a tide. None of us can do that, as the legendary tale of the ancient King Canute so neatly illustrates. It is a futile thing to think about. But that doesn't mean that a tide will not ever eventually, naturally, turn. Of course, it will. It has to. Every tide will sooner or later do this. And whilst it may not be wise to try to force the change, it surely must be wise to allow for the possibility of it happening.
