The great philosopher George Bernard Shaw said, 'I never resist temptation because I have found that things that are bad for me, do not tempt me.' Whilst we, the mere mortal readers, might be inclined to dismiss this statement as a pompous boast, he also said, 'Virtue is insufficient temptation.' Make of that what you will. They say, with age, comes wisdom. It can, but the process isn't automatic. Discrimination is called for and that's tricky because we might assume that as we grow older, we have less need to repeat the mistakes of our youth. Yet for all that we are entitled to draw on hard-won experience, we mustalso take care not to become entrenched in unfounded beliefs that we have allowed ourselves to uphold without question for too long. Don't dismiss, as 'proven beyond doubt' the case on which the jury is still out.
